Child mortality in Kenya: Recent health statistics show that 189,000 children in Kenya die from preventable causes before they celebrate their fifth birthday. Every minute, when the hand of the clock moves, 22 Kenyan children below the age of five will have died.
Maternal mortality in Kenya has remained unacceptably high at 488 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births (with some regions reporting MMRs of 1,000/100,000 live births) in 2008/9
BabyMed will provide critical and informative health care information on maternal and child health care in the form of text messages, voice messages and a mobile application in English and Swahili at no charge for pregnant women and mothers of newborn babies (up to 5 years of age), as well as to supporters (husband, friends and family) and information seekers
BabyMed supports the achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and the Campaign on Accelerated Reduction of Child and Maternal Mortality. BabyMed aims at improving maternal and child health through increased access to information by women, baby care givers and informaton seekers via mobile messages and a mobile application
BabyMed will provide timely and relevant information to pregnant women and mothers of newborn babies , as well as to supporters and information seekers. It will provide support and advice when it is needed. We believe that facilitating affordable and easy access to information on maternal and child healthcare will result in improved maternal health and reduced mortality rates, of which are listed as goal no. 4 and 5 under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Millennium Development Goal no. 4 aims for a two-thirds reduction in under-five mortality between 1990 and 2015
189,000 children in Kenya die from preventable causes before they celebrate their fifth birthday. Every minute, when the hand of the clock moves, 22 Kenyan children below the age of five will have died.Furthermore, Maternal mortality in Kenya has remained unacceptably high at 488 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births (with some regions reporting MMRs of 1,000/100,000 live births) in 2008/9. Most maternal deaths are due to causes directly related to pregnancy and childbirth unsafe abortion and obstetric complications such as severe bleeding, infection, hypertensive disorders, and obstructed labor. All these deaths are caused by preventable causes.
